Newcastle is host to not just one but two cat cafes – CatPawCino on the Quayside, and Mog on the Tyne, which is a little nearer the centre of town. I chose to visit the latter simply because the name – a pun on the famous (or at least, locally famous) song The Fog on the Tyne amused me. I wasn’t disappointed.
Open six days a week (closed Mondays) the way the cafe works is you book a slot and get an hour in the cafe. The slot costs £5, with any coffee or food you purchase extra, though the prices are very reasonable. Numbers in each slot are kept small to avoid stressing the cats out, and the venue also hosts special evenings, such as games or craft nights.
Inside, the vibe is relaxed. It’s very much designed to favour the cats rather than the customers – so you aren’t allowed to pick them up, and if some of the cats decide they are not in the mood to be sociable and retreat to the higher sections of the cafe, they are left be. In practice there is little risk of you being left catless: they are a friendly bunch (and on my visit, we were all given treats to share with them, which attracted plenty of attention).
The staff are friendly, and you are given notes on the cats so you can gauge their personalities and interact accordingly – for instance, one cat had been hit by a car and was slightly grumpy as a result, so we were instructed not to approach him and let him come to us (which he did rather cheerfully, though that was perhaps because he was after my cheese scone). Likewise the notes informed us that Ballet and Wobble, the two cuties who were stumbling and walking into things weren’t actually in pain or distress – they were rescues who had a neurological condition which affected their balance. (These were two of my favourites, as they were the most affectionate).
And if you are still feeling the need when you leave, there’s a dog cafe called Dog and Scone right next door…
Tracey Sinclair is blogging about her return to her hometown at the blog Prodigal Geordie. She is a freelance writer and author of 8 books, including the Dark Dates series and the Newcastle-set romcom Bridesmaid Blues.
There’s a new book in town that has the craziest among us ‘feline’ fine. It is no secret to the cat addicted that our fuzzy overlords improve our quality of life. Countless studies show the very presence of cats in our homes relieves anxiety, improves sleep and generally makes us happier. But, can they help our memory too? It’s quite purr-ssible.
The Crazy Cat Lady’s Activity Book for Adults is the perfect storm of brain food, kittens and catty humor. Cat-themed crossword puzzles, word searches, cryptograms, mazes, colouring and more elicit both the relaxation and memory challenges activity books are known for, but the benefits don’t stop there. Every page of this delightful book is packed full of so much whimsical cat art it could even make a Persian smile.
Crazy Cat Lady’s is no genetic publication. Producers of ordinary activity books often purchase simplistic themed word lists online. A generalized cat word list may be bundled up along with Caravans 101 and Tropical Fruit lists, all compiled by the same person. However, every puzzle in Crazy Cat Lady’s was curated one fluffy word at a time, by zoologist Nola Lee Kelsey, the owner of Soggy Nomad Press. A failed recovering cataholic, Kelsey’s love for felines and off-beat humor shows throughout her book.
So if you’re not relaxed enough just having cats in your life, double down on the tranquility. Check out The Crazy Cat Lady’s Activity Book for Adultstoday and laugh along while you exercise your memory and put your cat-savvy wisdom to the test. It’s all in good fun!
Incredible volunteer has transformed her home to become a haven for cats
A self-confessed cat crazy lady has transformed her house to help care for more than 200 moggies for the RSPCA to prepare them for finding their loving forever homes.
Maureen Austin (78), from Woking, Surrey, is one of the charity’s most prolific fosters and has also spent years volunteering at the nearby Millbrook Animal Centre, Chobham.
She has been fostering pets for more than 12 years and in that time has looked after more than 200 cats, including mums and kittens, hand-rearing orphaned pussies, and caring for elderly and sick cats – as well as a few dogs – three of which at different times she adopted!
The self confessed ‘cat-crazy lady’ has spoken about the important role she plays in the hope she can encourage others to help volunteer for the RSPCA as the charity has been inundated with abandoned and neglected pets due to the cost of living crisis and also to highlight the charity’s Winter campaign to raise funds to help to continue their vital rescue work.
It comes as results from an exclusive survey conducted on RSPCA frontline staff show 94.7% – say lack of space to take rescued animals is the top challenge facing the animal charity at the moment.
She said: “I know I’m helping the cats but they also help me. I get so much out of doing this – it is incredibly rewarding and I am so indebted to the RSPCA for entrusting me with so many beautiful animals.
“I hope my experience inspires others to take up this important role and also urge people to support the RSPCAs winter campaign so they can continue to rescue and rehome – so many cats in need.”
Fosterers play a vital role for the RSPCA, preparing pets for living in a home and freeing up much-needed space in animal centres so staff can care for more animal victims of cruelty and neglect.
Maureen retired from her role with a construction company in 2009 and jumped at the chance of being able to volunteer.
She said: “I initially went to Millbrook to help in any way I could, cleaning pens, washing food bowls and dirty cat litter trays and putting unending amounts of fleeces, towels and toys in the wash.
“I spent time helping in my own small way to socialise and gain the trust of the cats and kittens who had, through no fault of their own, found their way there. Then one day I was asked if I would foster some kittens and I have never looked back.
“I have always loved animals and birds – especially in my childhood – now I am again cocooned in a life filled with love, and a feeling of usefulness. I feel very lucky and really try to get to know the animals so I can help them going forward.
“Often early experiences of cruelty and neglect can have a lasting effect and yet many animals appear not to hold real grudges. Nurture and nourishment liberally dished out can slowly help even the most neglected animals – but respect, gentleness and consistency of handling and care can help cement a true bonding.”
Some pets have come to her terrified of their own shadow and too frightened to be touched due to being victims of horrendous cruelty. Others like Penny (pictured below) came from a household with 60 cats and she had never been socialised.
Maureen’s fostering role is to help them recover from their ordeal slowly and get them used to life in a home environment so they are ready to take their next step – and find their forever home.
Dedicated Maureen has even played surro-cat to newborn kittens she has handreared. The gruelling job means waking up every few hours through the night to feed and clean the tiny kittens.
The caring volunteer has even adapted her home so one of the bedrooms is converted into a cat specific room – complete with scratching post, toys, a television for them to watch and lots of comfy beds (pictured right). She also plays classical music to the cats in her care to help calm the more nervous ones and also reads stories to them to help with bonding.
She said it is difficult to say goodbye when they go to new homes but she knows they will flourish thanks to her help – and there will always be other pets in need of her patience and love.
She added: “Often the new owners keep in touch with me and send me updates and photographs of them enjoying their new lives.
“One cat who was described as one of the worst cases of cruelty the RSPCA had ever seen really took a very long time to recover and was not well enough to be adopted so I am delighted to get updates showing her enjoying being petted and loved in her new home.
Maureen juggles her caring activities while looking after her terrier-cross dog Belle aged 7 and cat Ebony aged 13. Both were originally fostered and then adopted and both she describes as ‘an absolute delight”.
The RSPCA is currently facing it’s toughest winter ever as the cost of living crisis is putting pressure on pet owners and incidents of neglect and abandonment are on the rise and centres are full to bursting.
Anyone interested in applying to be an RSPCA fosterer – to help free us space in busy animal centres – can apply online via the RSPCA’s website volunteer.rspca.org.uk
PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan provides top tips on what to do in an emergency
Despite our best efforts to protect our pets, accidents can and do happen. In serious cases, knowing what to do in an emergency can be the difference between life and death.
Life-threatening emergencies require speedy action, so it’s important to know what to do should something happen to your pet. There are many veterinary-led First Aid courses for pets that help you prepare for emergencies.
PDSA vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan, said: “Knowing how to respond in an emergency can be the difference between life and death in some circumstances. Taking some basic precautions can stop things from becoming very serious, and potentially life-threatening.”
To help pet owners get up to speed, here are Olivia’s top tips on first aid and what to do if an emergency should arise.
Don’t panic. If your pet is involved in an accident, it’s important to remain calm as you are more likely to be able to help your pet if you stay focused.
Assess the situation. Ensure it is safe to approach the animal. Look for moving cars, loose electrical cables and other hazards. Don’t put yourself in danger.
Animals that are in pain or scared can bite or scratch. Approach them from the front so they can see you, talk softly to them and take things slowly and carefully.
Check your pet for wounds, bleeding and any abnormalities. If a wound is bleeding excessively, apply firm pressure to the area using a temporary bandage or a clean towel, blanket or cloth.
If your pet is unresponsive, check their ‘ABC’ vital signs: A – check the Airway is clear, B – check they are Breathing C – check their Circulation – do they have a pulse/heartbeat? A veterinary-led first aid course can provide practical CPR training.
Call your vet as soon as you can. They can give you vital information, and if they need to see your pet it means they can be prepared for your arrival to save precious time.
Don’t let your pet have anything to eat or drink after an emergency, unless your vet says it’s ok to do so. Your pet may need to have been fasted if they need an anaesthetic.
Olivia adds: “It’s important to be prepared for an emergency. So keep a pet first aid kit at home and with you while you’re on the go. This can include bandages, wound dressings, a tick remover, and a foil blanket, for example. Keeping a leaflet of basic instructions on what to do in various types of emergencies can be helpful here too and PDSA has created a great new pet first aid guide for pet owners
I hear a sudden crash and I go numb.
I hope that no one’s hurt! Another lamp?
Aw, Blaze! You manic moth-hunter, you scamp!
How many have you shipwrecked, smashing chum?
Do you expect some high encomium?
Some florid phrase to glorify your stamp,
Wherein, you dashing enemy of the amp,
I celebrate Blaze Panda-monium?
The trick is you’re so passionately sweet!
You with your pink nosed decent panda face
Are so devotedly affectionate
That even though you in your madcap race
Bring lamps, drapes, crystal to a sad defeat,
You charm us so that we don’t mind one bit.
During the month of November cat lovers who adopted purrfectly impurrfect shelter cats were invited to share their own “happily furever after” story to inspire others by uploading a photo/video to FelineGenerous.com. Purrfectly impurrfect shelter cats are often overlooked for adoption due to age, illness, appearance, being bonded pairs or having misunderstood personalities.
During the month-long campaign, more than 5,500 photos/videos of these amazing cats living “happily furever after” were submitted and the ARM & HAMMER Feline Generous program recently announced the lucky winners as Elvis, Louie, Buddy, Miley and another Elvis.
Each winning pet parent will receive a year’s supply of ARM & HAMMER cat litter and each shelter will receive the $10,000 donation prize. The winning shelters are Kern County Animal Services (Bakersfield, CA), Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary (St. Pauls, NC), Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue (Denver, CO), Open Arms Animal Shelter (Louisa, KY), and Yavapai Humane Society (Prescott, AZ).
Purrfectly Impurrfect cats typically require a little extra patience and care to get acclimated in their new home. They may need extra time in their own room to get familiar with their new surroundings or even modifications to overcome a physical limitation. The “Happily Furever After” campaign celebrates those who have gone above and beyond to make sure their purrfectly impurrfect shelter cats get the love and care they need to successfully transition into their new homes ready to live “happily furrever after!”
Here’s more about each of the winners and what makes them “purrfectly impurrfect!”
Happily Furever After Winners
Winner #1
Cat: Elvis
Location: Louisa, KY
Pet Parent: Beverly Pack
Elvis has Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH) which gives him his own special “sway in the hips” when he walks. He cannot jump or even use the litter box like most normal cats…but he has adjusted and so have I!!! It’s actually what makes him such a wonderful member of my family. He is the proud “Foster Dad” to all the foster kittens we bring in from the local animal shelter—he cares for them, plays with them, nurtures them, teaches them the “cat stuff” they need to learn to be good kitties in their new homes. He LOVES all the babies we bring home for him to care for.
When he walks too fast or tries to run his legs just spread out underneath him. It’s not unusual to find him all spread-eagle on the floor somewhere, or just lying on his back with all 4’s in the air. He is such a funny boy!! This gentle, amazing boy loves everyone he meets and they just love him—you can’t help but love him. His big green eyes will just melt your heart.
Louie is a real stinker [and has a misunderstood personality]…he was feral and scared of everything. After he was spayed and neutered, he has lived inside. Louie will fly through the house as soon as everyone has gone to sleep including my dogs. I can’t leave food on the counter unless I’m standing right by it or it disappears. I’ve chased that boy more than once trying to get what he stole. I call Louie and Poppy (my Old English Sheepdog) …. “Bonnie and Clyde”…. he throws the food down to her. It took quite a while for me to be able to touch him. He warms up a little more each day. He loves sleeping curled up with his mom, Lucy.
Buddy is a bit crazy overall — but that [misunderstood personality] is what makes her purrfectly impurrfect. She’s scared to death of strangers. We joke that when she’s in a situation she doesn’t like, she mentally goes into her “happy place” until it’s over. She loves prowling around at night, making noise by opening drawers and cabinets. Sometimes I walk into a room and it looks like a ghost just left after rummaging in everything. She loves her sister (a cat) and tries to snuggle with her as much as she can but ends up annoying her sister too much. She sleeps right next to me at night. She’s 12, so she does spend most of the day sleeping in sun pockets on the floor or under the bed. But when she wakes up, she acts like a crazy kitten.
Little back story, one day at work I saw Miley on a live video from the shelter and thought she was the cutest ever. My wife called, and it turned out she was a bonded pair with her sister. We did not hesitate, give us both! Why would anyone separate them? Miley, is the sweetest! She’s the one who will tell you when it’s bedtime. Even though, she is the starter of the daily midnight zoomies. She loves to lay down with us and make her little biscuits in any blanket. She also has this little habit of sucking her paw since she was just a little baby. It’s the cutest ever. She’s a big baby! Loves all the attention. She and her sister remain inseparable. I’m glad we were able to keep them together. I love them!
Elvis has a misunderstood personality, even after 8+ years with me, he is still afraid of everything. Every time that I sit down, he wants to be on my lap. He starts kneading, purring up a storm while doing so. He likes to tear his crinkle balls apart, and can’t be trusted with most material toys, as he will ingest parts of them. He’s also been known to chew on clothing items left where he can reach them.
“We’re thrilled to recognize the many cat lovers and shelters that go above and beyond to put in the extra time, love and support to give purrfectly impurrfect cats the happily furever after they deserve,” said Kelly Dalton, Senior Associate Brand Manager, ARM & HAMMER Pet Care. “We hope by sharing these heartwarming stories it will inspire others to adopt a purrfectly impurrfect shelter cat and give them a happily furever after.”
The ARM & HAMMER Feline Generous program is an online platform that easily connects people to a network of local cat shelters across the country to help increase adoption and generate product and monetary donations, with a specific focus on cats who tend to be overlooked due to age, illness, appearance or misunderstood personalities.

HOW TO RAISE A HAPPY DOG
SO THEY LOVE YOU
(MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE)
09th March 2023 | Ivy Press | £12.99 | Hardback
We know how important happiness is for ourselves but when it comes to pets, making sure they’re happy – as opposed to obedient, say – is often underrated.
How to Raise a Happy Dog focuses on the happiness to be found in the person/pet relationship and includes dozens of ideas for activities and hacks you can build into daily life with your pet, from spontaneous play and activities to making them the perfect sleep spot.
Expert author, Sophie Collins, shows what you can learn from your pet’s behaviour and body language, offer a mass of practical ways to raise your pet’s happiness levels, and show you how to connect with them in the way they’ll love best.
Building on recent scientific developments into animal behavioural science, this book’s methods aim to increase inter-species understanding and encouraging the behaviour you do want, while discouraging the behaviour you don’t.
Like most people these days, you’re probably no stranger to having to deal with some form of air pollution.
It’s an unfortunate consequence of how we live our lives in 2018 and something that we should probably be trying to minimize for the sake of the planet.
People are starting to realize this and hopefully it’s a problem that will be dealt with at some point soon, but it’s not going to happen overnight.
And for the sake of your own health, you should try and personally deal with it in your own home. That’s possible with detoxifying plants.
If you’ve got pets, specifically cats, you should be careful about which plants you pick because some of them release pheromones that are very unhealthy for them.
Here are five plants that will detoxify your home but will also be safe for your feline friends.
Spider Plant
Chlorophytum, which is more commonly known as the spider plant, is a great detoxifier for your home and it’s one of the easier ones to maintain too.
It’s a plant that you will commonly find in the homes of people who are new to gardening and maintaining plants because they can thrive in any lighting.
There’s no need for sunlight and you just have to regularly water it to keep it alive. The spider plant will absorb carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and xylene, making it a great purifier.
And it’s completely non-toxic too. You or your cat could actually eat the leaves of the spider plant if you wanted to, so it’s an entirely safe one for your home.
It works really well as a natural humidifier for your home though, and much like the spider plant, it will help remove formaldehyde from the air.
Formaldehyde is a noted carcinogenic and it is also known to cause skin irritations as well as irritation to the eyes.
It’s a good plant to have if you live in high pollution areas or are near anywhere that there would be large amounts of gasoline.
This is because the palm is also effective in eliminating benzene from the air, a substance which is caused by the burning of petroleum and gasoline.
Barberton Daisy
Again, if you’re near a shop or a house that is going to be emitting a lot of benzene into the surrounding environment, then this will be a great plant for you.
It is an ideal plant for increasing the overall oxygen levels in the air too and it will also deal with formaldehyde as well as another compound known as trichloroethylene. This is a horrible thing to have in the air as it can cause damage to your nervous system and it’s also classified as a carcinogenic.
If you live near a garage or an industrial area there will probably be some of this in the air because it’s used by mechanics and the like.
The Barberton daisy will keep it well at bay though and it’s another one that you can take care of with relative ease.
Moth Orchids
The name ‘moth orchid’ doesn’t really sound all that healthy, but there’s a lot of benefits to having in your house.
It will absorb carbon dioxide and subsequently release oxygen into the air and it will also humidify the environment.
This will prevent seasonal allergies and it will also help you sleep better if you keep the plant in the bedroom.
Because it helps relieve stress and improves the air quality, it can help with healing too from various ailments and wounds.
The fact that it’s also a nice flower to look at is just an added bonus of all of this.
Lilyturf
The lilyturf will deal with formaldehyde and with xylene like some of the other plants on this list, but it’s also effective against ammonia.
Ammonia is a prevalent gas in many homes because it is produced by a lot of cleaning products and also in the fumes of paint. This is horrible for your respiratory system. It can cause bronchitis and throat irritation but also long-term things like emphysema.
If you are a sufferer of asthma already, then the lilyturf is a great plant because it will help prevent a flare-up of that and could relief some of the discomfort.
Conclusion
So as long as you’re careful with your choice, you really don’t have to worry about poisoning your pets with plants.
There’s plenty of plants that are extremely effective in purifying the air, which will have absolutely zero effect on the health of a cat.
Companies like TUI Musement, GetYourGuide, Trip.com, AttractionTickets.com and Jet2holidays are STILL, exploiting wildlife for profit despite 84%1 of UK citizens who believe that tour operators should not sell activities that cause wild animals suffering, according to a report by World Animal Protection.
Elephant riding, selfies with tiger cubs and swimming with dolphins were some of the cruel wildlife activities on offer by these travel brands, according to the Real Responsible Traveller report. The study reviewed 9 leading travel companies on their commitment to animal welfare and wildlife friendly tourism with the aim to help holiday makers plan a wildlife friendly holiday.
Thousands of wild animals every year are forced to perform for tourist entertainment or be subjects for tourist “experiences” that are incredibly unnatural and stressful for them. For example, elephants in entertainment are captured in the wild or born into captivity and taken from their mothers at an early age. They are then subjected to violent training regimes causing huge physical and psychological harm.
Dolphins used for entertainment are mostly bred in captivity, (although some are still captured from the wild) and kept in barren tanks a tiny fraction of their natural home range which creates huge distress for these wonderful animals.
Travelling responsibly means never including captive wildlife entertainment or experiences on your itinerary and refusing to book your holiday with travel companies which may claim to offer responsible, sustainable travel, while continuing to profit from wild animal exploitation. The report also shows the travel companies who have made significant, positive steps for wildlife over recent years including Airbnb, and Booking.com. Expedia has improved in some areas, having stopped selling captive dolphin entertainment in 2021.
Katheryn Wise, World Animal Protection, Wildlife Campaign Manager, said: “Holiday makers have made it clear; they don’t want tour operators selling animal suffering, but the reality is, suffering is still being sold under the guise of entertainment. Who you book your holiday with matters. TUI Musement, Jet2holidays, GetYourGuide Trip.com and Attraction Tickets.com are STILL exploiting captive wild animals.
“World Animal Protection is urging responsible travellers to join us in challenging these companies to do better for animals. Real responsible travellers have the power to act and create lasting change for wild animals by refusing to support companies that still treat wild animals as commodities who they can exploit for profit.
“We are also urging the UK government to take action by passing the Animals (Low Welfare Activities Abroad) Bill, which sees its second parliamentary reading take place on February 3rd. This important bill intends to stop the sale and advertising of activities abroad which involve low standards of welfare for animals.”
The Real ResponsibleTraveller report builds on World Animal Protection’s 2020 Tracking the Travel Industry report, which assessed Airbnb, AttractionTickets.com, Booking.com, DER Touristik, Expedia, Flight Centre, GetYourGuide, Klook, The Travel Corporation, Viator, Trip.com and TUI Musement.
World Animal Protection commissioned the University of Surrey who independently analysed the public commitments travel companies have, and haven’t, made.
Companies were scored across four key areas:
Commitment: Availability and quality of published animal welfare policies and how applicable they are to all their brands
Targets and performance: Availability and scope of published time bound targets and reports on progress towards meeting animal welfare commitments
Changing industry supply: Availability and quality of engagement with suppliers and the overall industry, to implement wildlife-friendly changes
Changing consumer demand: Availability and quality of educational animal welfare content and tools to empower consumers to make wildlife-friendly travel choices
World Animal Protection then checked to see if they offered any of the five “animal attractions”:
Elephant rides, feeding and washing
Feeding or petting primates
Selfies, shows, petting or walking with big cats
Swimming with captive dolphins and dolphin shows
The sale of any interactive “experiences” involving any captive wild animals (including for example sea lions, crocodiles and alligators)
